Let’s get one thing straight: The beach is always a good idea.
But when your crew is ready to shake off the sand, Grover Beach has plenty more up its sleeve. From a freshly transformed community park and hands-on science exhibits to batting cages, escape rooms, curious reptiles and adoptable cats, this small Central Coast beach town knows how to keep family time interesting.
Whether you’re searching for kids' activities on the Central Coast, planning a family vacation near Pismo Beach, or looking for an indoor adventure when the coastal fog rolls in, these six family-friendly things to do in Grover Beach deserve a spot on your itinerary.

1. Ramona Garden Park
Address: 993 Ramona Ave., Grover Beach, CA 93433
Cost: Free
Best for: All ages
Grover Beach’s longtime community gathering place has a fresh new groove.
Ramona Garden Park reopened just in time for summer 2026 following a major transformation, and locals wasted no time checking it out. The renovated park now includes an incredible all-abilities playground, an updated amphitheater with a new stage and bandshell, a spacious event lawn, modernized restrooms, accessible walkways, benches and picnic tables. The improvements were designed to make the park more welcoming, functional and inclusive for community members of all ages and abilities.
The playground is the main attraction for families, with plenty of opportunities to climb, swing, slide, zipline (yes, you read that right!) and burn off some vacation energy. Pack snacks or lunch and settle in at one of the picnic areas for an easygoing afternoon that does not require reservations, tickets or an elaborate game plan.
The park has also reclaimed its place as one of Grover Beach’s favorite community hubs. Its popular Summer Concert Series returned in 2026 with nine weeks of free Sunday performances through the end of August, food and craft vendors, and activities for all ages. The opening concerts brought big crowds back to the park. Try to get in on the action before the season ends, and be sure to come out for the Stone Soup Music Festival & Street Fair at the park Aug. 29-30.

2. Exploration Discovery Center

This is the kind of place where touching the exhibits is not only allowed, but it’s highly encouraged. The Exploration Discovery Center invites younger visitors to learn through hands-on exhibits inspired by science, technology, engineering, art and math. Kids can build, experiment, create and investigate at their own pace, making it a great option for curious little minds and families who prefer their learning with a generous side of play. Exhibits and attractions include:
Model trains
Water table and bubbles
Pretend veterinarian clinic and grocery store
Geology center with sand table and fossil hunting
Music room
Outdoor plant gardens
A real 1974 Piper Warrior airplane kids can play in
Rotating cultural exhibits
Arts and crafts centers
Much more!
The center is especially well suited for preschool and elementary-age children, although younger siblings can find plenty to explore, too. Since day passes are valid throughout the day, families may leave for lunch or a little downtime and return during operating hours. Also be sure to check their events calendar for dance days, animal programs, holiday entertainment and more.
It is also one of the best indoor activities for kids on the Central Coast, ideal for a foggy morning, an unexpectedly chilly beach day or any afternoon when the kids need a break from sitting still.

3. BK’s Reptiles & Zoo

Snakes, tortoises, amphibians, insects and rainbow-colored birds? That is one wildly good family outing. Opened in 2026, BK’s Reptiles & Zoo is a locally owned, family-run attraction that is home to more than 50 reptiles, amphibians, insects and lorikeets. The walk-through zoo was created to give visitors an engaging, interactive way to learn about animals that do not always get top billing at traditional zoos.
Families can explore the reptile exhibits, meet giant tortoises and add optional feeding experiences to the visit. Brave the lorikeet aviary and the brightly colored birds may land right on you while sipping nectar. Turtle and tortoise feeding experiences are also available, along with a bundled package covering general zoo admission and the feedings.
For animal-loving kids, this is easily one of the quirkiest family-friendly attractions near Pismo Beach. Expect plenty of wide eyes, excited pointing and at least one child asking whether a tortoise can come home with you.

Got a kid who would rather swing a bat than build a sandcastle? Step right up! SLO Swing Sports is an indoor batting cage facility where families can practice their swings, train together or simply have fun launching baseballs and softballs. Its high-tech pitching machines allow players to adjust elements such as pitch speed, direction and ball type, making the experience approachable for beginners while still offering a challenge for experienced athletes.
It is a fun choice for active kids, teenagers, sports teams and grown-ups who are convinced they have still got it. The facility also works well for parties, group outings and family competitions where bragging rights are absolutely on the line. Walk-ins are welcome, although checking availability before arriving is always a smart play. Add this one to the list of indoor family activities in San Luis Obispo County.

Coffee for the grown-ups. Cats for everyone. Honestly, this outing plans itself.
The Caffeinated Cat Café combines a cozy coffee shop with a lounge full of adoptable feline friends. Families can order drinks and snacks, then spend time relaxing, playing and making new four-legged acquaintances. Reservations for the cat lounge are highly recommended, especially during weekends and busy travel periods.
The atmosphere is relaxed, making this a good stop when your itinerary needs a slower activity. It can also be a sweet introduction to animal rescue and adoption for kids, although parents may want to prepare for one predictable side effect: repeated requests to bring a new best friend home.
